Website: www.localfoodbank.orgMANTECA, Calif. – April 25, 2024 – Amazon announced its collaboration with Second Harvest of the Greater Valley to support the food bank’s “Home Delivery” program. Through this collaboration, Amazon leverages its own logistics network to enable Second Harvest to provide bi-monthly food deliveries to the doorsteps of approximately 120 homebound individuals through its Amazon Community Delivery Program. Through this collaboration, Amazon and Second Harvest are helping those who have mobility challenges or lack reliable transportation to their local food pantry get access to free nutritious food. Amazon’s support also includes a $40,000 grant to further support the organization’s mission.

“By partnering with Amazon, we have been able to more than double our previous capacity to service our homebound community members. The beauty of this program is that we can now meet our clients where they are and deliver nutritious foods directly to their doorsteps,” shared Jessica Vaughn, CEO of Second Harvest of the Greater Valley.

Amazon tapped its drivers through its existing Amazon Flex network, a program that enables drivers to use their own vehicles, select their own hours, and earn extra income by delivering packages for Amazon. Amazon Flex drivers in Manteca are given the option to accept routes that deliver food for Second Harvest of the Greater Valley.

“As a mom of young kids, I really enjoy driving for Amazon Flex because it gives me the flexibility to work while my kids are in school but then make sure I can be there for them when they are home,” explained Jacquelyn Sy, an Amazon Flex driver in Manteca. “I love picking up the routes that cater clients from Second Harvest. Not only am I able to contribute to my household financially, but I feel really good knowing that I am able to help those who need it.”

The Home Delivery program provides nutritious food boxes with nonperishable pantry staples, fresh produce, dairy items, and frozen meat tailored for homebound individuals. In addition, Amazon offers the food bank monetary support, which has given Second Harvest more flexibility to procure food based on clients’ preferences and dietary restrictions.

This collaboration is part of a bigger effort by Amazon to address hunger nationwide. Since 2020, Amazon has delivered more than 33 million meals to underserved families’ doorsteps and donated 88 million pounds of food.

Second Harvest of the Greater Valley has served the community for over 46 years. Originally operating as a large food pantry, it has now evolved into a last-mile distribution service meeting clients where they are.
