Tax-smart ways to end hunger in our communities

Our work goes far. For every $1 you donate, SHGV can purchase $5 worth of food, meaning that a $25 donation is $125 worth of food and is enough to feed a family of four. But there are ways you can take your cash contributions to the next level and maximize your efforts to help us distribute food to those in need. Here’s how you can do it:

Donor-Advised Fund Grants: When you give through your DAF, you can use the funds you’ve already set aside to support the health and healing of our neighbors. DAFs allow you to see immediate tax benefits from your contributions and then pass them along to organizations like ours at opportune moments later on.

IRA Accounts: If you are 70.5 or older and have a traditional IRA, consider using the tool linked below to give from your account. Generally speaking, IRA gifts are always tax-free and can help you reduce your future tax burden and satisfy a Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) if you must take one while helping us feed our community.

Stock: Have any appreciated assets? Donating them avoids federal capital gains taxes and provides a federal income tax deduction for the current market value of the gift. We can use the full value of a stock to power our programs that respond to food insecurity—from providing emergency food assistance to folks in San Joaquin and Stanislaus Counties counties to offering fresh produce to individuals and families.

Crypto: Donating your crypto in support of SHGV can be a powerful way to advance our cause. When you sell your crypto, you generally have to pay a capital gains tax on the value increase. But if you put it to work to support our mission, there’s no capital gains tax to pay, meaning a larger impact on our work to feed our community hope.

When you give these types of gifts, please use the link below so we can track your gift, send you the right receipt, and ensure you get the tax savings you deserve.
